Spring is finally here – which means it’s the start of boat season! If you live in an area finally experiencing warm weather, it’s time to de-winterize your boat. Before you get back into the water, it’s essential to have the boat fully prepared after sitting immobile for so many months.

The major systems that need de-winterizing include the following.

• Engines: The first thing you must inspect on a boat is the engine. The process of de-winterizing an engine will vary based on type of engine, manufacturer, and model. Read the owner’s manual for specific information on your engine. The biggest differences are between outboard engines, and inboards or stern drives.
• Plumbing Systems: Flush out the cooling system, water pump, tanks and hoses with freshwater, until all the antifreeze you put during winterization has been washed away.

• Batteries and Electrical Systems: Make sure the marine battery is in place, hooked up properly, and fully charged. Check electrical connections for corrosion.

In addition to de-winterizing systems, other spring commissioning tasks are to inspect the fuel and electric systems, check all fluid levels, reload safety gear and other accessories and finally, clean, paint and wax.

If possible, you should have your boat inspected by a qualified marine mechanic. Once you’ve gone through these important steps, it’ll be time to get you back on the water to kickstart your boating adventures!
