2018 Hurricane Season

As we near the official start of summer, it’s also the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November. Last year the United States and its territories saw major devastation, as hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria blew through and made landfall.

In this Facts + Statistics article, the Insurance Industry Institution (I.I.I.) highlights the 2017 hurricane season and provides statistics on catastrophic losses in the U.S., the costliest hurricanes, estimated insured losses for historical hurricanes and other stats. The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was the first time three Category 4 hurricanes—Harvey, Irma and Maria—made landfall in the United States and its territories in one year, according to the I.I.I.

The article also provides a summary of the 2018 Hurricane Forecast report, released from Colorado State University. Their team is forecasting a near-average season with 14 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

Disasters can strike at any time, so preparation is key. For those who live in storm-prone areas or “play” on the water, check out our hurricane preparedness article for safety tips. It provides a thorough checklist for boat owners and homeowners, as well as a PSA from the National Weather Service.

Don’t let any bad weather get you down this summer! Enjoy the boating season and remember to stay safe when bad weather is in the forecast.
